Tummy Tuck Surgery: What Is It For?

Diet and exercise are the first tools to use when you want to lose weight and have a healthier figure. Unfortunately for some patients, all the exercise in the world will not help skin that hangs excessively. Many doctors and surgeons have likened our skin to elastic.

You can stretch it repeatedly but it always comes back to its regular shape. If you leave the elastic stretched for long periods of times however, it can begin to lose its elasticity and that is the same thing that happens to your skin.

A tummy tuck is not a procedure to use when you want to lose weight. It is generally used on patients who have lost large amounts of weight that they have carried for years. After losing all this weight, their skin was not able to bounce back to along with the fat in their bodies. A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is the medical term and cosmetic procedure that can help fix this medical problem.

During a tummy tuck, your surgeon will remove strips of skin from your stomach. After this removal of skin, the muscles underneath are tightened to help give you a flatter tummy than you had before.

Many women opt for this cosmetic surgery after child birth. For mothers who have multiple children it is also a favorite procedure due to the years of stretching and flattening of their pregnant bellies. Doing exercise may tighten many areas of your body but when the low section of your stomach has a constant pouch often called a “pooch it can be nearly impossible to get rid of without surgery.

While a tummy can be successful for millions of men and women, it is not recommended for everyone including these people :

  1. Patients who are obese or overweight should not consider this a weight loss surgery. It is a surgical procedure that can help after excess weight has been lost.

  1. If you have unrealistic goals you may not be chosen for this surgery. Some people expect to go into the surgery with a pooch or large amounts of sagging skin that is severe and they expect to be wheeled out of surgery with a six pack. This surgery lessens the amount of loose skin and tightens the muscle.

  1. After recovery without this extra skin you can begin an exercise regiment that pays close attention the stomach and its different sections to provide further tightening.

  1. Women who are pregnant should never consider tummy tucks a good idea. After you have given birth, you may visit a surgeon for advice, but you cannot have this surgery during pregnancy. If you are trying to lose weight, don’t try to have the surgery until after the weight loss. This will help you to lose skin and tighten muscles that you were not able to do with regular exercise.

So there you go.

There are many benefits to a tummy tuck and one of them is a smaller waist along with a flatter tummy. Another benefit to this type of surgery is that the scarring is kept in the bikini area so you can comfortably go to the beach and know that your scars won’t be seen by everyone.
